It was the turn of cup football to take centre stage midweek with the Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy providing the focus for many clubs. Where would the cup shocks come from?

Two acts of giant-killing as Codicote 49 places below unbeaten Aylesbury Vale Dynamos and New Bradwell St Peter 38 places below Leverstock Green saw their slingshots fell Goliath. Baldock Town began their defence of the League Challenge Trophy easing past Buckingham Athletic. Premier Division sides Eynesbury Rovers, Oxhey Jets and Dunstable Town all fell at the first hurdle to clubs from Division One.

20/21 August Stats: 18 games played of which 8 were home wins, 7 were away wins and 3 draws.

Highest Midweek Attendances: 88 Newport Pagnell Town v Enfield Borough, 81 Eynesbury Rovers v Bedford and 68 Rayners Lane v Harpenden Town.

With Codicote and New Bradwell St Peter providing the biggest shocks (see headlines above) there were other upsets as St Panteleimon booked their place in the Second Round with a 4-1 home success against Dunstable Town, Milton Keynes Robins thumped Oxhey Jets 7-4 having led 5-1 at the interval and Bedford overcame Eynesbury Rovers in a penalty shoot-out after the Premier Division outfit snatched a late equalizer in injury time. Potential banana-skins were avoid by Arlesey Town (v London Lions), Newport Pagnell Town (v Enfield Borough), Harpenden Town (v Rayners Lane) and North Greenford United (v Wodson Park) as the top flight club came out on top against opponents from Division One. There were plenty of goals at FC Broxbourne Borough as visitors Hillingdon Borough came out on top in the all Division One tie, winning 5-4. The battle of the big cats saw the Lions of Wembley overcome London Tigers thanks to a 77th minute winner. Two of the three all Premier Division ties saw away wins as Leighton Town won 3-0 at Broadfields United and Crawley Green beat Biggleswade United (now managed by former Crawley Green boss Chris Devane) 2-0 at Second Meadow whilst the London Colney players can look forward to some ‘pizza adverts’ as they went out on penalties at Potton United. Edgware Town booked their place in the Second Round with a 3-1 home success over Division Two side Pitstone & Ivinghoe while Colney Heath were given a scare before edging out Division Two side Sarratt by the odd goal in three. Wednesday night saw holders Baldock Town booking a Second Round place with a 4-1 win over Buckingham Athletic while Ampthill Town won 2-0 at Division Two side Unite MK. Full results and goalscorers (where known) are listed below.

A very amusing e-mail arrived in my in box his week from a new follower of SSML football, having decided to stop watching St Albans City due to ever rising ticket prices, he was at the Oxhey Jets v Arlesey Town game on Saturday and sent me the following.

In the second half there was a lovely moment when a Jets defender and the Jeremy Clarkson lookalike linesman had a discussion which went like this:

Lino: “Watch what you’re saying”

Jet: “I wasn’t talking to you”

Lino: “Well you were looking at me”

Jet: “That’s cos I can’t take my eyes off you, you’re such a beautiful human being”!
